One of the oldest methods in the world of selling products or services has been the venerable mailing list. From old time “direct mail” letters to modern email messages, the “LIST” has almost reached mythical proportions in marketing circles.
And with good reason because lists work! But most marketers are not sure exactly how to start and maintain a good email list. Read the 6 tips below to understand how to increase your email list building skills.
(1) Add a Sign Up For On Every Single Webpage of Your Site
Most people both old and new marketers forget this simple concept. Put your form in front of your visitors’ faces. Most people that come to your website will be “tourists” in one second and then they click away gone forever. Others are genuinely interested in what you to offer but either don’t have the need for it at the current time or don’t have the money. Make it easy for those interested to keep in contact with you. Put a sign-up form “above the fold” on each every page.
(2) Tout the Benefits of Joining Your List
On your subscription or landing page, “prove” to potential subscribers that your newsletter will not be (a) spam (b) a waste of their time. People have lots of info overload in their lives, so they want to read things in their inboxes that are interesting, useful or informative. Offer testimonials, sample messages or an archive of older newsletter issues. Show them “what’s in it for me”.
(3) Offer Special Opt-in Incentives
Okay, this seems like a bribe right? So? People have spam on top of spam, piling into their inboxes everyday and most of them of very tired of it. By creating a really good special report, giving away discount coupons, or great video or podcast series, you are offering a bit of carrot to a very timid gun-shy rabbit. You drop a little carrot here; a little lettuce there, and soon, they will come of their holes and take a full nibble of what you to offer. So start developing that bunny food.
(4) Use basic SEO Tactics
The most underutilized SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tip, I know about is page title names. Most people either don’t know or don’t bother to rename their webpage titles to reflect the content of the page. Say you write a serious kick-butt article on list building but on your website it’s named “list1.html”, “list2.html”. Give the search engines and potential prospects a chance to find you! You could rename them, “how-list-building-rocks.html” or “increase-profits-with-list-building.html”. Be clear about what’s on the page.
(5) Use Pay-per-Click Ads to Drive Traffic
If you have the budget, you can use something like Google’s Adwords program to push traffic to your email subscription landing page. You can select the keywords you want to use and then create a campaign around them, using classified like ads to get people to sign up. Make sure you have a great landing page, because every person who “clicks away” without signing up costs you money!
(6) Run a “Membership Drive”
Ask your current readers to help you get more subscribers. Set up “Send to a Friend” options on your website and ask people to send emails to their friends and business associates asking them to sign up. Give away a special report or coupons or some kind of prize to person who has the most “friends” to sign up.
By using these six tips for email list building, should you be well on your way to developing an awesome email list and powerful downline.
Once upon a time there were two friends, Fred and Bob. Both joined the same networking marketing group, they often would meet for lunch and coffee and discuss just how rich they both were going to be. Bob said that he was going to use the Internet to propel his downline. Fred said he was going to use both online and offline methods.
Fred often participated in face-to-face presentations and meetings. He along with his business card, he would always hand out well written info packets that had his email list’s web address boldly highlighted. He always encouraged people to sign up for his email newsletter. Bob would just hand out his cards and hoped for the best
Fred always included his “Newsletter” flyer (a printed sample of email newsletter) in any outgoing envelopes, packages, direct mail or catalogs he sent to customers or to business partners. And he always included his web address to his email list in any print ads. Bob would try and remember to stuff a business card or two into mailings if he thought about it.
Fred changed all his email programs so that “Subscribe to My Email Newsletter” was added every email, he ever sent to anyone. Bob decided to keep on using his “freebie” email service because he didn’t want to pay for web hosting.
Everytime Fred spoke with a potential prospect on the phone; he would always ask if he could include them on his email list. Sure some people said no thanks, but he was pleasantly surprised how many people said yes. Bob would never ask someone over the phone for their email address that just was rude.
On holidays or as once every 2-3 months, Fred would send a postcard to his local clients and customers asking them to also sign up for his free monthly email newsletter. Bob never sent out post cards that was “defeating the purpose of the net”.
Fred took out small classified ads in his local “bargain shopper” newspaper because he knew that the newspaper also duplicated all ads on their website and that a good many readers viewed it from online. Bob never used any local ads, for fear of the market being crowded.
Fred used online classifieds like Craigslist to push targeted local traffic to his email landing page. Bob never investigated anything that was not presented in marketing kit.
After six months Fred had already made down a number of more pressing debts and for the first time in years was developing a nice nest egg. Fred has a converted downline of several hundred people who were making both themselves and him a nice income. Bob was very disappointed with the program and quit telling everyone what a “rip off” it was.
While it possible to build a downline completely using online methods, if possible you should also supplement your Web marketing methods of very easy and affordable “offline” methods as well.
Have you ever thought about using a MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) to start your internet company? A networking or MLM system is one where you can market products to earn money but you can also earn commissions from people you recruit to your “downline”.
With a MLM program you can work from home, require little money to start-up yet have a potential of making passive income for many years. The Internet changed how most MLM programs work. Now you can use web based promotional techniques to build a profitable downline quicker and easier than ever.
There are thousands of MLM programs and companies available today. You must be careful before choosing a system and making a commitment to it.
Build a Downline with a Good Company
(1) Are You Selling a Good Product?
People like being part of a winning team. Picking a company that supports and markets an excellent product is a great way to make sure that your business appeals the best people. The best people in a downline are pulled from the ranks of satisfied customers.
(2) Is the product affordable?
The more people who can afford the product, the more sales you and your downline can make. If the product is good quality but too expensive for most people to buy then you will have a tough time marketing it and your downline will quickly become frustrated and embittered.
(3) Is the Company Stable?
Is the company a start-up? Or has been in operation for over a year or two? The longer a company has been in business the better. Its products and downline system have withstood the test of time. After all Avon has been around since 1886 in some form or another.
(4) Does the Company have a Good Rep?
Let’s be honest, a good many MLM style companies have a bad reputation. Some pull in thousands of associates only to decamp and disappear in the middle of the night. Put your ear to the ground (forums are a great source of information) and listen to see if you are finding a lot of bitter former associates and angry recruiters. Yes, it’s using the rumor mill, but sometimes rumors are true.
(5) Show Me the Money!
Look at the compensation plan. Does it have enough upward growth to make all your work worthwhile? Look at it in a realistic light. Sure you could make a million, but look at the numbers can you really pull it off?
(6) Does the Company have Room to Grow?
Is the niche market that the company working in growing or is it in a field that is overcrowded already? How about it’s competition? Is the competition established or just another upstart? Does the company have a ton of members (associates or consultants) or are you one of first to join in your area?
When build a downline make certain you try and choose the best company you can. The better the company the quicker and more productive your downline will become.
